“We weren’t really finding an obvious hook for our pavilion until we started looking at the recent urban development of Shanghai and Copenhagen. This is a photo of Shanghai from 30 years ago: broad boulevards jam packed with bicycles. Only 2 kinds of cars in Shanghai back then: Shanghai no 1 and Shanghai no 2. With the massive economic boom and urban explosion everybody wants a car, the streets are congested with traffic jams, and the bicycle has even become forbidden in some parts of town. In the same period of time, Copenhagen has been creating more bicycle lanes and reducing car traffic. The bicycle has become a symbol of a sustainable city and a healthy lifestyle.”

“We have developed multiple species of bikes to move not only ourselves but our kids and our stuff around as well. We even have a so-called City Bike that visitors can borrow for free and move around town before they return. We thought: Why don’t we relaunch the bicycle as something attractive in Shanghai. We’ll donate 1001 City Bikes to Shanghai that they can keep after the Expo.” Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) architect firm of the pavilion explains.

“The pavilion is designed as a traffic loop created by the motion of city bikes and pedestrians tied in a knot. Over 300 free city bikes located upon the roofscape, offer the visitors a chance to experience the Danish urban lifestyle which includes biking everywhere. The loops are connected in two places. Coming from the inside, the visitors can move out onto the roof, pick up a bike and re‐visit the exhibition by bike as the outdoor cycle path slips into the interior and runs along the entire exhibition before exiting onto the EXPO grounds. The sequence of events at the exhibition takes place between two parallel facades – the internal and external. The internal is closed and contains different functions of the pavilion. The width varies and is defined by the programme of the inner space. The pavilion’s external façade is made of perforated steel. In the evening time, the façade becomes a sequenced instrument of interactive light illuminating the passers‐by.”

“The pavilion is a monolithic structure in white painted steel which keeps it cool during the Shanghai summer sun due to its heat‐reflecting characteristics. The roof is covered with a light blue surfacing texture, known from Danish cycle paths. Inside, the floor is covered with light epoxy and also features the blue cycle path where the bikes pass through the building. The steel of the facade is perforated in a pattern that reflects the actual structural stresses that the pavilion is experiencing making it a 1:1 stress test. The blue cycle path and white concrete surfaces will further define the arrival and exit areas.”

หยิบเอาความคิดที่ว่า เมืองเซี่ยงไฮ้สมัยก่อนเต็มไปด้วยจักรยาน แต่ปัจจุบันถูกแทนที่ด้วยรถยนต์ ซึ่งก่อปัญหารถติด ในขณะที่โคเปนเฮเกนได้สร้างเลนจักรยานและพยายามจะลดปัญหารถติด ศาลาจัดแสดงของประเทศเดนมาร์ก จึงถูกออกแบบให้เป็นอาคารที่มีทางเดินและลู่จักรยานหมุนวนพันเป็นเกลียว โดยมีประติมากรรมนางเงือก (ของแท้)  ตั้งอยู่กลางโถง เพื่อนำเสนอให้ผู้มาชมได้มีโอกาสสัมผัสวิถีชีวิตแบบชาวเมืองเดนมาร์ก ซึ่งปั่นจักรยานไปได้ทุกหนแห่ง โดยทางเดนมาร์กจัดเตรียมจักรยานไว้ให้ยืมปั่นถึง 1,000 คัน (เมื่อจบงานจะมอบให้ทางเซี่ยงไฮ้) จะปั่นชมภายในศาลานี้ หรือจะปั่นไปทั่วพื้นที่จัดแสดงก็ไม่ได้ห้าม

Once, i had blogged about “when the trees became the chairs” (in Thai) of the Bouroullec Brothers. Now, i found new book titled “The Making of Design – From the first sketches to the final product“. Only the concept of the book is worth enough for one to collect. Because it is a great lessons and inspirations by itself to see how design things become as they finally invented. Lastly, when i found that inside the book has a story of the wonderful “vegetal” chair, that i had once blog about, it is no more questions or hesitations, let’s pick it!

ปีก่อนเคยเขียนบล็อคถึง ผลงานของ 2 พี่น้องนักออกแบบ Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec เรื่อง “เมื่อต้นไม้กลายเป็นเก้าอี้” วันนี้เจอหนังสือ “The Making of Design – From the first sketches to the final product” ว่าเฉพาะ โดยตัวแนวคิดของหนังสือเองอย่างเดียว ก็น่าสนใจมากๆ แล้ว เพราะได้การเห็นลำดับ ขั้นตอน พัฒนาการ จากเส้นสเก็ต มาสู่ผลลัพท์ขั้นสมบูรณ์สุดท้ายนั้น ทรงคุณค่า เป็นทั้งบทเรียนและแรงบันดาลใจในตัวของมันเองโดยสมบูรณ์ และยิ่งเมื่อพบว่าในเล่มยังมีส่วนเกี่ยวกับการสร้างเก้าอี้ที่ปราดเปรื่อง ที่เคยเขียนถึง ยิ่งทำให้มือไม้สั่น ใจระหวยหวยโห ใคร่อยากได้มาจับมาดม เป็นยิ่งนัก นะหนังสือนะ! (ในอเมซอน เล่มละ 36 US น่าจะประมาณ 1,300 บ พี่เดือนซื้อให้ด้วย)

I post about Malissa’s shoe by Zaha hadid, Hadid Architecture for your feet, a few month ago. In that post it shown 2 interesting pictures: the picture of weared shoes’ legs that seem to be flying and the picture of giant shoe in display room. Now i will introduce you 2 video clips about that interesting pictures. The first clip is about how flote & flow feeling when we wear this shoes, while the later clip is about making of the mock-up of this shoe. They are amazing clips.

Ah.. it’s rainy season now. Let’s think about umbrella designing of the future. It’s so great to start from “the inseparable umbrella”. It’s so sweet, isn’t it? If your romantic-meter is not high enough, I recommend this “Music in the Rain umbrella”. Walking with your lover under the same umbrella at a raining day and listening music, is it sound so good? But if you always struck on Hi5 giving friends commend, on raining day you may need “the Internet Umbrella”. And here we have, “the aerodynamic umbrella”, it was approved to pass the wind tunnel test! but I am not sure, Do I still dry? “the Hands Free Umbrella” no longer problem to use cell phone when you use umbrella! But my most favorite to introduce you is “the UFO Cap (Umbrella)”. It is so futuristic and style. Buy it and let your rainy season become funny season.

หน้าฝนมาถึงแล้ว เรามาครุ่นคิดถึงการออกแบบร่มในอนาคตกันดีกว่า เริ่มต้นที่ “ร่มคู่รัก” สองเราจะไม่แยกจากกัน สวีทซ้ะ, ถ้ายังโรแมนติกไม่พอ เดินเคียงคู่ฟังเพลงไปด้วย “ร่มดนตรี” ก็น่าสนใจ, ติดฮิห้ามากหน่อย ก็ต้องใช้ “ร่มอินเตอร์เน็ต”, “ร่มที่ออกแบบโดยใช้หลักอากาศพลศาสตร์” ไม่ต้านแรงลม คิดมากซ๊ะ แต่ท่าจะเปียก, แต่ที่ล้ำยุคกว่าเพื่อนเห็นจะไม่มีใครเกิน “ร่มไม่ต้องใช้มือถือ” หมดปัญหาใช้โทรศพท์ระหว่างถือร่ม อะฮ่า พยายามมากมาย แต่ที่ผมถูกใจที่สุดคือนี่ครับ “ร่มยานยูเอฟโอ” ล้ำยุคและมีสไตส์ ซื้อมาใช้เลย แล้วหน้าฝนของคุณจะไม่น่าเบื่ออีกต่อไป
